church's (HIS)tory

HBC VISION
"A community of mature believers empowered in fulfilling God-ordained purpose and ministry."

HBC MISSION STATEMENT
Himamaylan Baptist Church is a Christian organization that is committed

-to preach the Word of God, and
- to generate funds for the sustenance of its services, and
- to develop and implement socio-economic programs and projects, and
- to do partnership with other organizations

so that God's ordained purpose and ministry be fulfilled.

CHURCH's 'HIS'TORY

We recall the birth of our church. It began with the arrival
of foreign missionaries to the Philippines at the beginning
of this century. Two of the first ten missionaries in 1904
who visited Himamaylan were William O. Valentine and
Henry W. Munger. And from 1914-1920, they concentrated
their missionary work in Himamaylan that led to the
establishment of The Himamaylan Baptist Church in 1915.

Rev. William O. Valentine, with Pastor Inocentes Alteros,
baptized the first converts. They were Pedro Bolneo,
Teofista Bison, Cayetano Villalva, Jose Ghofulpo,
Francisco Morana, Segundina Bison, Eusebio Bangilan,
Aquilino Gimotea, and the young daughter of Ciriaca Montalvo.
A native of Ilog and teacher at Himamaylan Private Academy,
Pastor Alteros became the first pastor of the church.

Later, Herminigildo Villavecer returned (from San Nicolas,
Manila, where he worked as a preacher) to join Pastor Alteros.
Their worked together between 1920-25, marked by their close
fellowship with American missionaries, resulted in another
group of converts who became pillars of the church.

This group consisted of Julio Llamas, Gavino Saraet,
Francisco Clamor, Toribia Tacusalme, Jose Peña,
Felicidad Pendon, Teofilo Gandola, Gregorio Peña, Esteban Ban,
Mr. Tabares, Leonardo Tanate, Jacinto Vallota, Elena Saraet,
Rosario Saraet, Natividad Villavecer and children.

The original site of the first church building was on the eastern
side of Sarmiento Street. (Now Crecensiano Sian Residence). To
its north was a big Spanish building owned by Pedro Vasquez that
became the private school establishment in line with our evangelistic
campaign.. M.W. Valentine supplied its library with books.

The church found a new location when Ciriaca Montalvo’s daughter
was baptized. She gave Lot #80 as an offering to be the site of the
new church building that was constructed in 1920. Ever since, that
site and building had been home to generations of faithful Baptists
in Himamaylan.

Our remembrance and thanksgiving bring joy to our hearts as
well as refresh our partnership. We live confidently with hope that
God who began a good work among us will continue to inspire and
enable us. This hope is particularly symbolized by our construction
of a new, modern Himamaylan Baptist Church building.

Historical notes are from Pablo Bangilan’s handwritten record.
An elementary school teacher, he was first Adult Sunday School
Teacher of the church, He contributed so much to the spread of the
gospel here in Himamaylan through his zeal and labor of love for the gospel.

HBC MINISTER’S HALL OF FAME

They led us to the sheepfold and kept us safe. They led us to
the green pastures and still waters. Without them we would not
have feasted at the Lord’s Table. We would not have partaken
of the Bread of life and of the Cup of blessing.

We thank you God of our ministers and workers. May God
continue to bless them and their families abundantly.

now flourishing. The HBC Choir even performed an Easter
Concert in Bais City Plaza to help strengthen the growth
of the new church. The work has been turned over to the
Negros Kasapulanan who continues to take dare of the work.
